Every taxpayer is required to have a PAN number while filing an income tax return. PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a unique number allotted to every taxpayer in India. The PAN card contains the PAN number and identity details of an individual.

What is a PAN Card?

A PAN card is a card issued by the Income Tax Department under the Income Tax Act, 1961. The PAN card contains 10-digit alphanumeric code which is computer-generated and is PAN number. Along with it, it also includes individual details, such as name and date of birth.

Who can avail a PAN Card?

PAN can be availed by individuals, companies, and partnership firms. It is mandatory for such entities to have a valid PAN number while filing income tax returns. In fact, individuals, minors, students, and NRIs can apply for PAN card online and offline.

How to Apply for PAN Card Online & Offline?

You can apply for PAN card online as well as offline. The following are the ways to apply for a PAN card.

PAN Card Online Application

  • Step 1: Visit the NSDL or UTIITSL website for online PAN card application.
  • Step 2: Click on NEW PAN option on the home page.
  • Step 3: Fill the new PAN card form 49A, which is for Indian citizens, NRI/NRE, and OCI individuals.
  • Step 4: Fill the form with your details.
  • Step 5: Next, you have to pay the processing fee online through demand draft after submitting the form.
  • Step 6: The final page will be generated, which will contain the 15-digit acknowledgement number.
  • Step 7: Send the acknowledgement form to the NSDL PAN office by courier within 15 days along with the concerned documents.
  • Step 8: After the verification, the physical PAN card will be sent within 15 days.

Offline PAN Card Application

  • Step 1: Collect a PAN card form copy from UTIISL agent.
  • Step 2: Fill the form and attach the PAN card documents, such as an address, identity proof, photographs, etc.
  • Step 3: Submit the form with the processing fee.
  • Step 4: PAN card will be delivered to you within 15 days.
