What is MSME?

MSME full form is Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. MSMEs are the backbone of the Indian economy. The Indian MSMEs sector contributes about 29% towards the GDP through its national and international trade.

Businesses register under MSME get several benefits like low interest on a business loan, flexible loan repayment tenure of up to 4 years, can avail business loans, and can avail government loan schemes like CGTMSE and PMEGP.

What are Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise?

Before MSME was categorised based on the investment in plant and machinery or equipment. To avail of MSME loan benefits, the MSMEs need to maintain their investment to a lower limit, as shown below:

Existing MSME Classification
ManufacturingInvestment< Rs. 25 Lakh< Rs. 5 Crore< Rs. 10 Crore
ServicesInvestment< Rs. 10 Lakh< Rs. 2 Crore< Rs. 5 Crore

The lower limit was the reason business persons were struggling to grow their business and were demanding the revision of MSME classification.

Now, under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan (ABA), the government have revised the MSME classification* based on the criteria of both investment and annual turnover. Additionally, the distinction between the manufacturing and the services sectors under the MSME definition has been removed.

Here is the new MSME definition based on where both the investment and annual turnover will be considered.

Revised MSME Classification
Investment & Annual Turnover< Rs.1 crore & < Rs.5 crore< Rs.10 crore & < Rs.50 crore< Rs.50 crore & < Rs.250 crore
